Hey, and welcome to another issue of NFToday!

Fun Fact: Over the weekend, I competed in my first gymnastic meet on floor and vault! It was honestly an exhilarating experience that I do hope to continue in the future. For now, Bengay has been my best friend in assisting me in recovering my legs since they are in another dimension.

With that said, let's get on with some news!

In today's newsletter:

  • The Long Awaited Ethereum Merge

  • Epic Games Store lists first NFT game

  • Starbucks Launching NFT platform

“The Merge” Update

Ethereum successfully shifted from proof of work (energy-guzzling) to proof of stake (efficient) last week, eliciting relieved cheers from crypto fans.

Now investors can stake their ETH to earn yield (think: interest), creating added incentives for crypto titans and hedge funds to hold ether. But there could be trouble ahead: Ethereum devs are warning of post-Merge bugs, and the SEC said last week that a crypto that allows people to stake coins and earn yield might be a security.

On other news, Ethereum miners will no longer be needed after the Merge, but their computer rigs won't end up in the dump. Mining companies plan to diversify by repurposing the machines for cloud computing and AI.

Epic Game's NFT Game Drop

Blankos Block Party became the first blockchain-based game to land on the game marketplace of Fortnite creator Epic Games. Mythical Games, the studio behind Blankos, proclaimed that more than one million players have joined since its launch in December 2020.

The free-to-play party game lets users collaborate in their hunt for vinyl toys that can be bought, upgraded, and sold within a colorful online world. Blankos has attracted Burberry, and Atari for limited-edition NFT drops.

Digital item ownership is positioned for an accelerated growth period – Blankos Block Party is the only NFT-enabled game in the Epic Games marketplace, where roughly 200 million total users participate globally.

Iced Coffee Deluxe NFT Special

The coffee giant has tapped Ethereum scaling solution Polygon to introduce a brand new NFT-based loyalty program. With the “Starbucks Odyssey” Web3 campaign, customers will be able to earn digital stamps that can unlock rewards such as exclusive merchandise, private events, and even trips to Starbucks Reserve Roasteries.

The initiative is set to rollout later this year.

With this move, Starbucks shows it knows how to stay ahead of the curve as it pivots toward relevant trends embraced by coffee lovers.

This also highlights the fusion between leisure and entertainment – another use case for the overarching NFT space.
